Synth Riders Current Waves DLC (Pimax Crystal Light)

Game Info:

Synth Riders Current Waves DLC
Release date: March 6, 2025
Available on: Steam, MetaQuest, PSVR2
Developed by: Kluge Interactive
Published by: Kluge Interactive
Genre: Rhythm
Number of players: Single-player, up to five players online
MSRP: $7.95 for the bundle or $1.99 per song

Thank you Kluge Interactive for sending us this DLC pack to review!

Synth Riders Current Waves DLC contains five songs that are guaranteed to get stuck in your head. I can confirm that is true for at least one of the tracks I purchased after playing this DLC pack. While these are chart-topping songs, this was my first time hearing and dancing to them in virtual reality!

You can buy each of the five songs individually for $1.99 or you can save 20% by purchasing the bundle for $7.95. The five tracks include:

David Guetta & OneRepublic - "I Don't Wanna Wait"
Sia - "Gimme Love"
Artemas - "i like the way you kiss me"
Charli xcx - "Apple"
Jack Harlow - "Lovin On Me"

The video is missing.
Highlights:

Strong Points: Enjoyed most of the songs
Weak Points: Not a fan of all the songs in the bundle
Moral Warnings:  The song “Lovin On Me” references kinks like whips, chains, and choking; thankfully the f-bomb is censored out

My favorite song in that list is “I Don’t Wanna Wait”. My least favorite is “Lovin On Me” because I’m not a fan of rap music. I wasn’t sure what “Apple” was talking about. I did find “Gimme love” catchy and put that as my second favorite. But not good enough to purchase….yet.

Nothing has changed gameplay wise. You have to touch similarly-colored orbs with your hands. Your left hand is blue while the right one is pink. Green orbs can be tapped with either hand and orange ones require both hands to get credit. There are also many pink walls that you have to dodge. Pink orbs placed near these obstacles may be hard to see at times.

Tapping the orbs alone will increase your combo, but if you look closely, the orbs are rotating. For maximum points you should aim to match them up with your hand positions, but that takes some quick reflexes!

Score Breakdown:
Higher is better
(10/10 is perfect)

Game Score - 86%
Gameplay - 15/20
Graphics - 8/10
Sound - 10/10
Stability - 5/5
Controls - 5/5

Morality Score - 86%
Violence: 10/10
Language: 6/10
Sexual Content: 7/10
Occult/Supernatural: 10/10
Cultural/moral/Ethical: 10/10

You should be able to play the entire tracklist in under twenty minutes. There are online leaderboards to compare your score against. I won’t be dethroning anyone soon as the scores from my feeble attempts are half of the top place holder's. You can change the difficulty for added replay value. Lastly, you can join multiplayer and compete against five players at a time!

This game and DLC ran great on the Pimax Crystal Light VR headset we were sent to review. For maximum performance I ran it on my 5070TI-powered desktop. My first attempt to stream this game resulted in lots of stuttering for the viewers. Outside of a stutter and one instance of losing hand tracking, the game ran great. After setting the OpenXR Runtime to Pimax OpenXR instead of SteamVR, Synth Riders ran flawlessly AND the stream was perfect without any dropped frames. I even managed to beat my high score and ended the songs I played with perfect combos!

I enjoyed most of the songs included in this bundle. “Lovin On Me” isn’t very family-friendly with references to kinks like whips, chains, and choking. I could tell that the one f-bomb in the song was censored out. The other songs were catchy and “I Don't Wanna Wait” definitely got stuck in my head.
