Thank you Red Chain Games Ltd. For sending us a review key!

Red Chain Games has a few mobile titles under their belt and Boxed In is their first virtual reality game. A VR headset is not required to play this game, but it is recommended. Unfortunately, I could only play this game in short spurts due to motion sickness.

Boxed In offers two game modes with several variants. You can take your time in solitaire mode or see how long you can last in survival. Before you dive into either mode, be sure to complete the tutorial. The tutorial will teach you how to teleport and move the blocks. The laser beam on your right hand will randomly change colors and with it you can change the color of an existing block or create an adjacent block of that color. During my stream, it took me a little bit to figure out how to create a block. The secret is that you have to be pointing at the block (not the floor!) and press the handle button.

Highlights:

Strong Points: Multiple game modes; online leaderboards
Weak Points: Limited box destruction patterns; can trigger motion sickness
Moral Warnings: You can get crushed by boxes

You can change your perspective from being behind the blocks, above, or below them. The head moving made me nauseous so I recommend staying behind them if you have motion sickness. No matter which perspective you’ll play at, you’ll encounter blocks that are by themselves or in pairs. In order to clear blocks, you have to either have rows of three or a square pattern of four. I wish there was an option to allow both formations. In either case, you’ll need to create blocks to get rid of the stragglers. I don’t know why, but that option eluded me in my game stream.

The music is fitting for the different modes. The survival mode has a fast-paced synthesized track that keeps your adrenaline flowing while the solitaire music is more calm and relaxing. The sound effects for shooting your laser guns and the breaking blocks are fitting as well.

Score Breakdown:
Higher is better
(10/10 is perfect)

Game Score - 76%
Gameplay: 14/20
Graphics: 7/10
Sound: 7/10
Controls: 5/5
Stability: 5/5 Morality Score - 98%
Violence: 9/10
Language: 10/10
Sexual Content: 10/10
Occult/Supernatural: 10/10
Cultural/Moral/Ethical: 10/10

Visually this game is pretty basic but has some nice touches. I like how the checkered floor shows reflections of the surroundings. The confetti explosions are rewarding to watch, especially when you get chained combos. For an added challenge you can change the number of block colors from three to four or five.

There’s little to complain about morally. If you're claustrophobic you probably will not enjoy the survival mode.

The asking price of this title is a reasonable $4.99 and I have seen it on sale for as little as $2.99. If you like fast passed or relaxing VR puzzle games, Boxed In has you covered. If you easily get motion sickness you may want to give this one a pass or play it in the non-VR mode.

Rainbow Six Siege: The Easiest Esport to Watch, the Hardest to Understand
Siege is a strange one to recommend. On the surface it's the most accessible competitive shooter to watch — rounds are short, the objective is obvious, and there's no respawning to keep track of. Ten players, one bomb site, three minutes. But s...
