The Hermit Calamari Jerky

- Thank you The Hermit for providing us with review samples to try!
I’ve never been a huge seafood person. My exposure to it growing up consisted of tuna fish and fish fillets or sticks. As a general rule when given the choice of surf or turf I will pick a steak most of the time. With that being said, I do enjoy the occasional salmon steak or calamari appetizer.
I love beef jerky, and my favorite flavor is typically teriyaki. While high sodium is a given, many beef jerky offerings contain a lot of sugar, too. I have tried zero sugar variants, but I have been disappointed by them. The video is missing. The Hermit offers three exciting flavors for their calamari jerky. These flavors are: - Ginger Scallion – You can really taste the ginger in this one. There are only two grams of sugar in this offering and it sells for $11.99 for 2oz
- Italian Herb – The most subtle flavor they offer that doesn’t overpower the calamari experience. There’s only one gram of sugar and it’s available for $11.99 for 2oz.
- Tai Chili Lime – I could really taste the lime which complements the seafood taste nicely. The Thai chili seasoning gives it a gentle kick. This variant has zero sugar. Surprisingly, this flavor is slightly cheaper at $9.99 for 2oz.
During my unboxing video I tried each of the varieties, and they’re all quite different. When opening the package, you’ll get a whiff of the fishy smell which is unavoidable. I found the consistency to be a bit on the chewy side. Out of all of them, I probably have to give the nod to the Italian Herb one since its has the least overpowering flavoring. The others are interesting contenders too.
I used the same control group from my previous beef jerky review with mixed results. My husband has been the only one to come back for seconds. He loves seafood and doesn’t mind zero sugar beef jerky. My daughter tried two out three of the flavors. My son tried the Thai Chili and gave the uneaten portion to my husband. My boss who loves beef jerky took one bite and threw out the uneaten portion. He’s not a fan.
If you enjoy seafood, you will probably like The Hermit Calamari jerky. All of the benefits of eating fish are there including omega-3 and collagen. This is a good jerky to consider if you’re watching your sugar intake. Unfortunately, it’s a bit on the pricey side. However, they do offer bulk discounts of up to 18% off if you buy eight or more.
