Windrose is an open‑world “soulslite” pirate adventure with building, crafting, and both solo and co‑op multiplayer. Developed by Kraken Express, the studio stated, “Windrose aims to be an adventure, without some of the more hardcore simulation aspects… we want it to be fun and simple.” That philosophy shines through as you sail vast open seas, scour islands for treasure, battle enemies, and haul your hard‑earned bounty back to your pirate base.

The story is currently presented through comic‑style slides. It’s decent, though not particularly standout. You begin as a betrayed captain saved by a mysterious artifact, soon pulled into a conflict involving rival empires, pirate clans, and ancient dark magic. Multiple factions offer rewards ranging from décor to armor to ship upgrades. Side quests include familiar objectives like defeating enemies, finding treasure, talking to NPCs, and exploring dungeons. Even so, it remains a sandbox crafting game at heart—you can follow the narrative or ignore it entirely to focus on fortifications, interior design, or building your dream pirate hideout.

Windrose leans heavily toward scattered islands—many of which currently lack meaningful points of interest. There’s one major town and a couple of smaller settlements with only a handful of residents. These isolated islands can lead to long stretches of sailing but if those aren’t your thing, the enchanting acapella sea shanties may win you over. I didn’t know I was a fan of sea shanties until Windrose made me one. The rest of the soundtrack is soothing and fits the atmosphere well. Fortunately, fast‑travel points make navigating the large map painless. You can build a fort on any of these islands as long as you build a bonfire first. Building is intuitive and streamlined, letting you construct anything from a rugged pirate fort to a cozy seaside cottage. Farming provides food buffs, NPC recruits offer passive bonuses or resource generation, and home décor grants comfort buffs. It’s a solid blend of co‑op PvE systems wrapped in a fresh pirate theme.

Highlights:

Strong Points: Fun single or multiplayer survival game with a pirate theme
Weak Points: Most islands are bland and lack meaningful points of interest
Moral Warnings: Violence against NPCs and animals; dark magic ingrained in lore and some enemies; you fight monsters and zombies

Windrose is built in Unreal Engine and boasts impressive visual fidelity. Water flows beautifully, islands are lush with foliage, and ships and galleons are well‑designed. Occasional bugs appear—unfortunately not the kind you fight. There are some clipping issues, dying at sea leaves unremovable icons, nothing game breaking. The overall attention to detail in clothing, props, and décor helps immerse players in its pirate‑themed world.

Some of these islands have dungeons offering unique weapons, accessories, and gear. When there are dungeons, there are puzzles that are fortunately easy enough and do not lead to frustration while still adding variety. The treasures you find within each lair are unique upgradeable weapons and gear that come with stat scaling or passives, letting you tailor your loadout to your preferred playstyle. You can further customize your character with the simple stat system and the straightforward skill tree which are easy to understand. To gain those stats or ability points for the skill tree, you need to level up through Experience points which are earned through exploring dungeons, side quests, and main quests—not combat. You’re rewarded for exploration and story progression rather than grinding enemies. No farming a million boars to reach max level!

Combat is simple where you can dodge, block, parry, and strike at the right moment. Enemies telegraph their attacks clearly, giving you time to react. Boss fights feature recognizable patterns and tells. Controls are simple—light and heavy attacks, aiming and reloading firearms, sprinting, dashing, and jumping—very much in line with the genre.

Score Breakdown:
Higher is better
(10/10 is perfect)

Game Score - 82%
Gameplay - 15/20
Graphics - 7/10
Sound - 10/10
Stability - 4/5
Controls - 5/5

Morality Score - 77%
Violence - 7/10
Language - 10/10
Sexual Content - 8.5/10
Occult/Supernatural - 3/10
Cultural/Moral/Ethical - 8.5/10

Morally, Windrose is rated PG‑13 so there is some mild sexual content like characters in character creation can be wearing bikini tops. There is some violence including combat with guns and swordplay, but there is an option to disable blood and wound effects. Sorcery appears in the lore and among certain enemies. As expected in a pirate‑themed game, you’ll encounter swords, firearms, and plenty of fighting. The game’s writing is intentionally accessible, offering dialogue styled after the adventurous tone of Treasure Island.

Players also battle animals such as boars, wolves, dodos, and giant crabs—something to note if you prefer avoiding harm to animals. There are also large monsters and zombies throughout the world.

Overall, Windrose is a solid pirate‑themed entry in the multiplayer PvE action‑RPG adventure space. Morally, it includes PG‑13 violence, light sorcery, and dark‑magic elements woven into the lore and certain enemies. If cooperative exploration with a pirate twist is your thing, there’s plenty to enjoy. As a fan of soulslike and co‑op PvE games, Windrose is a welcome addition to my library.
