The year is 1789. The place, France during the bloody revolution. You awake head down buried in a biomass of flesh, and you have no idea who you are. The only thing you have to go on is the mysterious voice of a woman. Pleading for help, you go towards the voice, hoping to find some answers.

So begins your adventure in this single player, deck-building roguelike game. You can carry up to 40 cards at a time. You can customize your experience by using cards. Build your deck the way you want with over 100 different types of cards to choose from. Everything from axes, guns, blades and even music! What makes the gameplay super interesting is that you can only use two cards at a time. This is what makes it so interesting, because you're going to have to decide on what stays and what goes. To use the cards, you must have mana. Once the mana is gone, you must burn cards to refill the gauge. Play with them and customize your deck, making something that expresses your approach to combat. Liberte has about 40 hours’ worth of gameplay to be had, but you can push it a little further depending on how you play.

Visually speaking, this is where the game takes a hit. It’s not an ugly game, but it’s not pretty to look at. The animations are horrible; it seems like characters glide through the environment rather than walking through them. And don’t get me started on lack of diversity in the environment. I played for about an hour and a half through recycled backgrounds. The same streets, the same architecture. There sadly isn’t enough variety. Everything basically looks the same.

In the sound department it's, okay. Nothing that stands out. I will say that the voiceovers aren't bad, but the music and sounds aren't very well done.

Now that we have got the complaints out of the way, let’s talk about features. As stated before, the gameplay loop relies on dynamic deck building. The game is 2-4 players local co-op with no online-great to play with loved ones and friends. Liberte is a mature game, with a mature storyline. It’s a mix between the French revolution and a Lovecraftian horror. There are soldiers fighting as well as otherworldly creatures. Some people you come across can’t be trusted; there are plenty of gray areas to go around. Liberte runs at a smooth 60 frames per second with 4K HD graphics. I just wish the art was better. It’s 4 player couch co-op as well, so you and your family and friends can play with each other. There is no online mode which I found odd, but it is what it is.

Before anything else, I am a Christian. And as such, I must look at everything through a Christian lens. When it comes to the world of gaming, as a believer, you must take caution in what you feed your spirit. Liberte is violent, and somewhat demonic but it isn’t to a level where I’d say to avoid the game. It’s worth playing.

I really like the story of the game and how it unfolds. Don’t worry, I’m not going to spoil it for you. Just know a lot of thought was put into this. I never felt liked I got robbed of my money. If you’re looking for something to burn a few hours of entertainment, you can’t go wrong with this one. Liberte earned my respect, and hopefully it will for you too.
